This one is a simple post about an appetizer we occasionally have, usually when guests are coming over. It’s one of those classic frozen appetizers that takes very little effort or time to prepare, mini quiches. In this case, Hannaford’s Taste of Inspirations Mini Quiche Collection was what we used. We also decorated it with a few apple slices and some pecans. All are cheaply & easily available at the Clinton Hannaford.
The wine that goes best with this appetizer is a French Pouilly-Fuisse, specifically Chateau Vitallis Pouilly-Fuisse Les Vignes du Chateau 2021. The Pouilly-Fuisse is a Bergundian Chardonnay from the town of Lignieres in the Maconnais subregion of Burgundy. The other most exported Pouilly-Fuisse is the Jouis Jadot AOC. Both are in the mid to upper end of Billy’s price range and are available at Clinton Wine & Spirits. Either would be a good choice, but I prefer the Chateau Vitallis (between the two).
Why the Pouilly-Fuisse with this appetizer? This full bodied, yet soft chardonnay is very versatile and goes well with a variety of food. As with most French wines, it’s mellow, not aggressive, which is what you want with this light, yet flavorful appetizer. The variety of “centers” in the collection encourage a mellow, full bodied white. Given that the Chateau Vitallis has apple and nut floral notes, I would STRONGLY recommend the “decorations” we added. They pair perfectly with the wine. Although Burgundy is renowned for it extremely expensive wine, the Pouilly-Fuisses from Maconnais are always reasonably priced. Another very excellent choice would be the Joseph Drouhin (my restaurant “go to”). Just be aware that this wine tends to run in Steve’s price range.
That will do it for this one. Next time, I will do an Education post on the basic wine varietals. Be sure to check it out. Cheers!
